Virginia Going AAU

Scoring from the Bottom...

Virginia is now predominantly AAU! Central Virginia has been AAU, and now with the help of Vic Morales in the Potomac Valley, northern Virginia registered 1500 AAU members this year!

The BIG fish however was Grundy from the Eastern Shore switching to AAU. Grundy, a strong club with 250 members, should bring Eastern Virginia with them. Then the western area will most likely follow suit.

It looks like Virginia is going AAU just in time for the AAU Junior Olympic Games. They will be run there next summer. Congratulations to Wade Schalles, Josh Henson, Mike Newburn, Frank Lipoli and all others who helped make this happen!

In the Finals of the NCAA Tournament, five out of the ten matches went into overtime. Two were decided in the 30-second tie-breaker and both were won by the wrestler who won the flip and chose bottom!

In three other overtime matches the score was 1-1 during regulation, with an escape being the only points scored by each wrestler. In other words, a youth wrestler needs to learn to get out of the bottom! Choosing top is going to backfire at the higher level competitions if you can't score from bottom!

Another NCAA tidbit...

The ten champions were all from different schools.

Alaska in Disarray

What has the ASAA (Alaska School Activities Association) done now?! They have caused a split of their wrestling season into two seasons!

Alaskan schools now have to choose which wrestling season they will comptete in, the fall or spring season. The fall season will be from September - December. Then the spring season will be from January - April.

As of right now it looks like 59 schools will compete in the fall (overlapping football!) and 17 (yes, I said 17!) will compete in the spring.

What was wrong with the old system that was used for over 20 years?! How will the 59 schools whose season ends in December prepare for the High School Nationals while the "Lower 48" are in the heart of their seasons?

Seems to me that ASAA doesn't care much about the wrestling in Alaska! What team or individual would like to walk around with "State Champion" title when there was only 17 schools competing?!

Good Luck Alaska!!!
